Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, is the day the country remembers Americans who have died serving the Nation during time of war (including the Civil War). VFW posts sell "Buddy Poppies" for people to utilize to show their support and remembrance. The poppies were originally inspired by Moina Michaels' poem "In Flanders Fields" in 1915.

The poem reads:

We Cherish too, the Poppy red,

That grows on fields where valor led,

It seems to signal to the skies,

That blood of heroes never dies.

The poppies were sold to assist Veterans and families and to honor those who have died serving the Nation.

There is also a "National Moment of Remembrance" for all Americans to voluntarily and informally observe, in their own way, a moment of remembrance and respect. It is observed at 3 PM local time on Memorial Day.
